There are five levels of danger when it comes to indoor air pollution. "Dangerous gases” are the most serious. Look at each level to learn how they apply to your home. We have also created short videos to educate you about each level.

Danger Level 5: Hazardous Gases

Radon and carbon monoxide are toxic gases affecting many homes throughout the U.S. Approximately one in fifteen homes have high radon levels. Even more concerning, these gases are odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Radon gas occurs naturally as uranium in soil and rock decays and enters homes through cracks and penetrations in slabs and foundations.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is from faulty fuel-burning appliances, including furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and wood stoves. Idling cars, vehicles, and outdoor power equipment also produce CO.

Combined, radon and carbon monoxide cause thousands of deaths annually in the United States and Canada. Radon-caused lung cancer kills 15,000 to 21,000 people a year in the U.S. alone.

Danger Level 4: Microbial Growth

Fungus, such as mold and mildew, cause many health problems. When these micro-organisms grow they create microscopic spores that can travel on air currents from their sources to all areas throughout the home. They are so small that they can easily enter your lungs when you inhale.

Sensitive individuals can have mild or severe reactions with symptoms like nose and throat irritation, a stuffy nose, wheezing, eye irritation, skin irritation, shortness of breath, and asthma flares. Excessive mold has been linked to children developing asthma. For immunocompromised people or those with chronic lung diseases, there is even more risk of opportunistic fungal infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Danger Level 3: Allergens & Particulates

Common allergens and particulates, including dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke (both wood and tobacco), vehicle exhaust, and insect debris, cause health problems like nose and throat irritation, runny noses, congestion, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and asthma flares. Even worse, having particulates in the air can significantly increase the danger of radon gas. Gas particles attach to the dust and smoke particles, are inhaled, and lodge in lung tissue.

Radon Service Pros’s strategies for eliminating allergens and particulates are installing a dehumidifier or an electronic air filter and an energy recovery ventilator in existing HVAC systems.

Danger Level 2: Infectious Illnesses

Indoor air pollution, like airborne bacteria and viruses, is brought in by family members and pets. Infectious diseases can include bacterial diseases, such as streptococcus, pneumococcus, and tuberculosis, or viral diseases such as influenza, RSV, pneumonia, common cold viruses, and SARS. The symptoms caused by infectious illnesses include sinusitis, upper respiratory issues, throat and ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Radon Service Pros offers highly effective air filtration solutions that can reduce viruses and bacteria in your home.

Danger Level 1: Toxic Compounds

As homes become tighter and more energy efficient, toxic compounds can build up and lead to negative health issues. Toxic compounds can be caused by building materials, furniture, carpets, paints, solvents, cleaning chemicals, and personal care products. They may also be brought into the home from outside. For example, pesticides can be tracked into the house on shoes or the paws of pets. Dry-cleaned clothing is carried in on hangers. Toxic compounds include formaldehyde, methylene chloride, acetone, benzene, toluene, and many other carcinogens. Short-term symptoms associated with this danger level include memory lapse, mild depression, lung dysfunction, blurred vision, headaches, and lethargy. Long-term exposure to high levels of these compounds may cause cancer and affect the liver, kidneys, and nervous system.
